1 Mantón de Manila comes from a popular Spanish zarzuela: La verbena de la Paloma
(1894) by Tomás Bretón with libretto by Ricardo de la Vega. Charles Lummis recorded Enferina Soleta singing a version of
this piece in 1904.
2 Eleanor Hague also wrote several music books about californio
and Spanish-language music in the Americas. She worked with Lummis’ cylinder recordings, and
published some of her transcriptions of those recordings. Since she was here participating in this
event that included some of the Lummis informants, she would have had the opportunity to work directly
with those informants in deciphering the recordings. Find further information about Ms. Hague’s work at
